Ever since the show Toddlers and Tiaras aired, my daughter Gracie was determined to be in a beauty pageant. Me, being the not so “girlie girl”, had zero pageant experience and knew nothing other than what was seen on TV. I honestly Googled local beauty pageants and came up with nothing. I did not want to deny her, just because pageants were not something that I was interested in. I told her in good faith that there were no pageants locally and that we were not going to spend tons of money and travel just for pageants.
Then one day in November we were invited to a get together at a friend’s house. While there Gracie noticed a big display case of crowns and pageant awards. Their daughter is a local pageant queen and has won several pageant titles. They took out the crowns, banners, trophies, and pictures and entertained Gracie. From then on, they have been keeping me up on the new pageants in our area.
My biggest fear getting into these was that she would be terribly upset if she were not to win. I think my daughter is beautiful, but I also know there are many other beautiful girls out there with shining personalities. I love competition, but pageants were never “my thing”. I told Gracie that we would give it a chance and that when it was no longer fun, we would stop. Gracie has not had any training, other than watching TV shows, I do her hair and the only make up she wears is lip gloss and maschera (which she asked for). Since then Gracie has been in 3 pageants (November, December, January) and she has won in her division at all 3 pageants.
When Gracie is asked why she likes pageants her answers are always: ”It’s fun, I like dressing up, and it makes me feel like a princess”.
How can I deny her this, as long as she enjoys it?
